  • Could a plane land on a conveyor belt safely?

I am sick of the usual plane and conveyor belt thread. And lets face it there are very few times when you are going to have a plane that takes off and doesnt land on a runway. Could a land on the same conveyor belt that it took off from?

    I have no idea.

Of course it could – though they'd have to be pretty careful with the wheel braking and they'd need uprated tyres, bearings and grease. 😀

    Aye, maybe, but how?

Yes but as soon as it stopped it would take off again in reverse.

How what? They'd just land it on the conveyor belt, which could be moving towards them or away from them, or it could be still until they touched down.

Sorry, no additional puzzle here. Try harder.

If they can land on the land on the earth which is spinning at up to around 1000mph then a conveyor belt should be a doddle.

If the conveyor belt was just like in the other puzzle…

Purist – the plane is effectively geostationary though.

Obi_Twa – OK, if you're going to be pedantic, how about planes landing on an aircraft carrier?

no, planes need moving air to land and take off

Stick some rollers on the aircraft carrier. Can it land then?

no, planes need moving air to land and take off

Technically they don't, they need a difference in air pressure over the wing.
If the air was stationary they'd land pretty damn quickly!

    no, see previous answer

    …then…?

    Dammit, make your point man!

dave – a difference in air pressure will cause air to move, I win 🙂

a helicopter with wheels could land on a conveyor

GrahamS – crucial word is safely. Its not really safe until it has stopped moving.

Well, if the conveyor performs as per the original where it tries to match the planes speed then yes, as the plane slowed (through reducing thrust and gentle feathering of the wheel brakes) then the belt would slow too.

If the belt isn't slowing then the plane could presumably drive off the end of it and then stop as normal.

    So yes.

good thinking – get our luggage back quicker 😉

an aircraft carrier at full whack might represent a conveyor belt – if the landing area was long enough not to need trip wires for stopping the plane ? so yes a plane could land on a conveyor.
