  • Cotswolders – what's the Hayles Abbey/Farm descent/climb like these days?

I’ve not ridden it for a few years now, and it used to be decent fun in either direction (in an old school just riding around the countryside no gnarpoons required XC kinda way).

However, I have a vague memory that it was ‘improved’ by the council since I last rode it. Is that right? If so, what’s it like now?

    Sorry, what?

It’s still ‘improved’ unfortunately, so definitely not the technical ascent or descent it used to be. It’s a bit looser now than when they first resurfaced it but you’d have more fun coming down the ‘waterpump’ or into Stanton or Laverton.

I was doing it on the road bike, 23mm tyres, 39×26 bottom gear if that gives some idea of its state a couple of months ago…

Ah, right, cheers. Sounds like it’s a steady start to a ride then (we’ll be staying at the fruit farm) rather than a riotous end.

Shame, it was a cracking little descent 🙁
