I never start these debates but boy do I get tangled in them.
Has anyone ever changed their mind as a result? do any of us learn from them?
I have learnt a lot about bikes on here - but I really don't know if the arguments about social issues realy do anything at all. I have maybe learn a few bit sand perhaps gained a better apreciation of peoples ideas on things.

Well I am embarrassed to say, I have learnt that I am in fact, something of a "liberal".........I simply had no idea 
I've always dismissed bourgeois liberal Guardian readers. But as I have never felt the slightest inclination to string up from the nearest tree, all obese chavs who watch the X factor, I have to conclude that I must be a 'liberal'. I'm mortified .......I can tell yer 
Don't think I've ever changed my mind totally on a subject, but I have come to appreciate the reasons why some folk see things differently from others.
Bloddy leftie censorship.
I'd prefer to debate tricky topics than not. We have different experiences and it's enlightening to share them.
I just think people need to show respect to those who holding opposing points-of-view, not say call them stupid.

I used to be an atheist and a Tory. Now I'm a Christian liberal. 
Controversial topics? That's a controversial topic isn't it?
Don't think I've really changed my mind about things, but I've definitely become a lot more broad-minded and tolerant as a result of reading other people's opinions. Chatting about controversial topics is not something I do in my daily life.
I have certainly changed my mind about my opinion of many posters though...usually for the better!!

Not on this site, but another forum I frequent, there are some very educated people, and through discussing things with them, I've been encouraged to do some reading of my own, and changed my position on quite a few political issues.
get out and ride your bike more then you wont have to look , and dont forget to wear that bloomin helmet !

- seems true of this place. Some people can debate and discuss, most seem to think bile and vitriol is an argument, and just slate everyone who doesn't fall in line with their opinion as an idiot. That whole sorry helmet thread was a case in point.
I've taken part in debates on forums that have changed my mind, but never ever on STW.

Controversy is good, and, remarkably is done with a limited amount of abuse and silliness; the helmet thread is a good example.......
