As in very cheap…2.8 diesel from around 1999.

Really just looking to use it as a dog/bike transporter. The one I have seen has 144k on the clock, and is just over a grand.

Is this just madness, or is it worth a punt.

Ours a petrol one, had 140k on it and still ran perfectly and never gave us any trouble over the many years we owned it (we had 2 over 10 years 200,000 miles) What killed it was a rusty fuel tank (under car at rear, there is an access hatch to look at pump in boot). We where quoted £2.5k for new tank etc so scrapped car which was in hindsight almost certainly a mistake. Have a good look over it, signs of serious off roading / damage also has it been used as a towing vehicle.

Finally a young lad skidded into the back of it on the M3, his 206 was a write off, the Mitsubishi needed the bumber straightening a bit. That does work the other way as I think if you hit something you shouldn’t expect mich in the waynif crumple zone / impact absorbtion

Pump seal as above, if it is faulty the truck will cut out after about 5 minutes of driving, it will start again though, approximately £250 to fix, specialist job.
The heads can warp due to overheating, check coolant levels, oil level etc.
24mpg is about average for mixed diving.
That’s about it on the 2.8, it’s a reasonably tough truck, old reliable technology.
I’ve had 2, I enjoyed owning both of them.
I would have another if I only wanted to spend a grand.

We’ve got a delica, similar age, same engine and chassis I think, just a bigger interior space. It been great. Regular trips to the alps and all over the UK. Lots of support and spares available. Decent off road, fine on the road. Would buy another.

Good cars, watch out for chassis rust especially the front cross member and fuel tank as mentioned above, power steering pipes rust through too.

I had one a while ago and would agree – be prepared to walk away though if something big an important goes wrong

We had the fuel pump issue – importer sorted it for £80 IIRK – local diesel specialists were completely confused by the problem – stalling after running a while

I had one which I only used for towing which it did very well. All the electrics worked well. Mechanically it was good until the water pump gave up. Hard to spot as the coolant only leaked when hot, then evaporated on the hot engines. The head cracked between the valves. A new head, with the cam, valves and springs was a very reasonable £250 on eBay. A straightforward DIY swap.

Chassis and body mount rust killed mine. I think I paid £1600 for it, thrashed it for four or five years and sold it for £500 to a local breakers yard who were going to export it to Africa.

OP if its badged Pajero it may well have been an import, shouldn’t be an issue jusy fyi as all obviously made in Japan

You could go with the SWB, take the back seats out for the dog and fit a bike rack to the back. Would be lighter and more nimble than the LWB.
