Just saw this on Stif’s shop site regarding Rock Shox SIDs:

The most winningest cross country fork is still capable of propelling you to the winner’s podium, but now it makes a great short travel trail fork, too.

    It’s catching.

but SPAMBotty is a well known windup artist :o)
[and only able to communicate vocally in strangled grunts and screams]

Steady on Barnes… I meant what I said, but it is indeed a very trivial thing. Some people have rants on STW and everyone agrees. My very existance here is to be wrong, constantly, I think you’ll find.

well, I’m gratified to see you answering to your new name :o)

    spellingwise anyhow…

that would be uncommonly dull 🙁

    simonfbarnes – he was right

Recall a bloke called Shakespeare ?

are you trying to suggest that Shakespeare English is the correct one? cos i think you’ll be wrong.

demand they call it your “pie number” ?

or PI number, but then everyone would be either 3141 or 3142 depending on your application / rounding up standpoint.

ETA: Well done Mr Peat – now how about following it up with the World Champs and World Cup?

are you trying to suggest that Shakespeare(an) English is the correct one?

well, I think it’ll pass, don’t you ? Old forms become obsolete, but they don’t generally lose their meaning and stop being words. Many supposed ‘Americanisms’ are in fact Elizabethan English, preserved by word of mouth over there…

See, even as I say I’m wrong, I’m more wrong than I thought I was.

Either that or you’re more anal than I thought you were, which would be tough…..

    😉

To borrow a phrase I read the other day – STW has just donned a beige Cardigan and tartan slippers and is now dancing very badly in a room full of teenagers

    Posted 4 hours ago # Report-Post

Hey, that was aimed at YOU.

Don’t you mean that STW has joined you in the room, saying ” Hey isn’t Lily Allen catchy” while the teeangers hide behind their alcopops. 😉

you have me wrong, I don’t really care about spelling, except to make fun of people who complain about falling standards or the creation of new words :o) Surely if you’re going to defend the integrity of the language you need to be consistent ?

    Also from the front page

Benji and trusty lieutenant JonWIII travel to the southerest, westerest bits of Wales in search of fresh trails. And they find them, nestled among the gales.

I don’t care about what they do in Wales. They’re all thick anyway.

Why should that be the case?

else why bother defending it ? Spelling and grammar are merely enforced consistency (for the alleged purpose of comprehension), so there would be scarce point inconsistently defending that consistency…

personally, I think consistency, spelling and grammar overrated 🙂

i think it was one of the Bauhaus guys that tried to do away with all but the bear minimum punctuation.

I’m heavily in favour of punctuation :o) It’s the bits in between that can be tedious…

because you’re the one who supposedly cares about these things :o) But only when it suits you it appears 🙂

    Bare minimum

I quite liked ‘bear’, more animlistic!

Now, you see that line about the Welsh was said tongue-in-cheek, as people inferred the line that prompted this thread was.

I typed it purely to get a reaction. a troll line if you like.

Your reaction was roughly as predictable as I expected.

If I make a point, I’m wrong. If someone else makes one, they’re clever.

No offence intended. Point proven, thanks for your help.

Spelling is not my point. That was a fat-fingered typing error, I just get sick of correcting tham, and stop looking for them…..probably….

I do however appreciate you taking the time to check my spelling. It’s like being back at school again. 🙂

Americanisms, however, are a different thing entirely. Some, as I’ve already said I can live with, but there’s a few that really get my blood pressure up.
I imagine everyone has little things that irk them from time to time?

Ahem, let me assure you that my criticism of others is indiscriminate :o) And for that matter, people agree with you a lot more than they do with me, and I’m not complaining!

I just get sick of correcting tham, and stop looking for them

so you object to others infringing your preferences, but have no problem infringing theirs ?

I imagine everyone has little things that irk them from time to time?

and the best way to inner harmony is to rise above these trivia!

I took it as read that the post was tongue in cheek, that’s why I responded that way. If I’d thought you were being serious I probably wouldn’t have bothered. No offence taken at all.

No, yours was actually slightly more inertesting, SFB, as it provoked this response from me.

Using the word “dumb” to mean “stupid” is an Americanism too Pete. Wordyness fail! 😉

Brakes, “shittingest” is now my word of the week. In fact I’m going to use it in casual conversation tomorrow. At work. In my appraisal.

I think the rule is that Americanisms are OK provided that have the SPAMBotty seal of approval 🙂
