condensation in the loft - how much should I worry about it?

Went up into the loft yesterday to check out a leak. The leak is one thing which needs looking at (builder who fixed the roof recently will do that) but I noticed there is quite a lot of condensation up there.

How much do I need to worry about it?
What can I do about it?

There is about 150-200mm insulation, do I need more to stop the condensation?

There are vent holes at each end in the eves (detached house) and I don't know if there are vents round the edges, but the insulation is piled up a bit there.

sounds like it needs more ventilation, not more insulation.

Theres your problem - if the insulation is piled up there then it is restricting the airflow. Get it stripped back to leave a minimum clear airgap of 50mm and that should resolve your issue.

you need more ventilation, it could be that the insulation in the eaves is blocking the vents and preventing a proper flow of air.

If I look down into the eaves in my loft (over the top of the 300mm of insulation) I can see daylight and feel some breeze on my face. Can you?

You may need more ventilation but could the problem not be connected to the leak you mention?

leak is localised, the condensation is covering the underside of the tiles over significant areas.

We just had the mortar between the tiles replaced over the whole roof and I think that has stopped the unintended ventilation. Getting the insulation out of the roof edges isn't going to be fun

Well, I saw him the other day when I was up there having a cuppa - he didn't stop long though, there's a terrible draft from somewhere.

Is it not possible that the condensation is only a problem because of the excess moisture caused by the leak? Remove the leak and maybe the original venting will take care of the rest?
