Hi Chaps,
Has anyone used Self Amalgamating tape on a whole bike to make it look less expensive carbon and good to steal. I was in NYC recently and noticed quite a few MTB’s dressed in the black stuff for protection. My lad is at Uni and wants to join the SU bike team and stay fit. They have a secure area for storage where access is restricted to students only but better if it’s not shiny and tempting. I have lockable skewers and a big fat lock for him.
Or is not really feasible?

This ‘secure area’……do you have any idea how secure it is?
We had ‘secure bike storage’ at uni and when a load of scrotes decided to turn up one evening in a Transit, they had no problem getting in and taking a shed full of bikes.
The only one that didn’t get taken was my mate’s who had been too lazy to get round to fitting the front wheel to her bike so they left it there, presumably because it was incomplete.
Most of the bikes were old clunkers – mine was a £180 Halfords Apollo, but was still worth nicking to them.
If it was me, I’d get a cheap bike and if possible get him to keep it in his room.
If that’s not possible, then get him to at least consider wheels and seatpost out and stored in his room, just so it’s not so attractive to thiefs looking to make an easy sale.
As for the ‘disguise tape’; it might put some thieves off, but if someone has gone to the trouble of getting into the secure storage, then they’ll probably just have the lot. Only thing it might help with is if there are other bikes there that are obviously worth more….?
