The Grand design walk through type.

Looking as if we will be doing some major house renovations in the near future. I have done this a couple of times in the past and and although I have a clear picture of what I am after, in my head but it often gets lost in translation.

So a walkthrough graphic would be great to help all involved see what we are after ( and be good for getting the design right)

Quite happy to pay of course and doing this myself not an option ( it’s just not my bag)

so where do I go to get it done ? would prefer North East England based so we can sit down and talk it through.

architects would be my best guess.

    Where are you based?

Cost can vary massively, do you need you house measuring up?

If you just want somethign simple you could always draw it up in google sketchup that will give you a 3d view to look around, i think you can even do walkthrough’s on it.

If you’ve got a clear idea what you want then just find a freelance 3D cad/design person. Should only take a couple of hours for something simple

to be honest, putting the time in yourself may give a better result.

google’s sketchup is ( once you get over the intiial learning hurdles ) very good for basic sketching of 3d stuff.

I did a sketchup of what i wanted my extension to be like, and then handed it to the architect for my ideas,.

he said it helped tremendously compared to just speaking a description.

If you’re happy to have a go with sketchup(*) it can provide some decent results – certainly enough to get a feeling of the space & where furniture would fit. I’ve done it for our place and for the MIL’s, but was already pretty handy with SketchUp before that so there was no faffage.

Thanks Mike, I have used architects for a similar project, but it did not go well and the project stalled. The they did work was Ok but there was zero communication. I get the feeling that smaller projects get very quickly set aside if anything more lucrative or interesting comes their way ( understandable but annoying)

I would prefer a going direct to some computer graphics people. Those kitchen design graphics would probably do the job I am after ( for the whole house ?) Just wonder if there was a way to access this without pretending to buy a B and Q kitchen 🙂

Having some architects in the family I’d suggest choosing one carefully and probably from a samll/independent firm – even someone freelance who will just work on your job.

Doing something yourself even as a start will help, if you can find someone you connect with to do the design you will probably get more out of it. You don’t have to go with the first one you see.

I have seen some great results with sketchup, and have had a go with it. but I have to just admit to myself that I am never going to have the patience/dedication to get the results I am after.

Greeble..I will check them out thanks.

EDIT: Looks great Greeble, but expansive..Think my small renovation project would be well down on their whoo Hoo cool job list.

    I am based near Newcastle.

So, what do you want exactly?

Someone to come measure up your house, draw it in 3D and create a walkthrough type video? Your budget may be a little small for that imo.

If you want a simple 3D model using sketchup that you can look around and have a before/after to see what you think then its probably within budget if a house measure isn’t required.

I’d glady do it for £400.

One of my best friends is a computer animator specialising in animations of new builds, renovations etc. He used to work for an architect so that’s why he went down that path.

One of his recent jobs was this: http://www.hud.ac.uk/about/campus-life/learning-and-leisure-centre/gallery/

There is a link to a fly-through video he did on that page too.

I assume cost will depend on how realistic you want the finished product to look like.

I would measure up and draw up a simple plans on paper and take photographs.

I would then like to see this computerized ( 3D ?)

Then sit alongside the computer person and remove walls, render surface finishes and kitchen set up etc that ie what it will look like after the renovation.

I know this would be a fair bit of work perhaps a days work for the initial plan and days work for the alterations.

£100-£200 a day would seem to be a reasonable rate ?

That sounds fairly reasonable. I would happily put it together on Sketchup but the rendering and materials are fairly poor/limited.

£400 will be around half a days fee for an established company that specialises in this sort of thing, I doubt they’d get far enough along in that time to give you anything useful so I’d forget about contacting specialist companies. You need either a freelancer, a student or someone willing to do it in their spare time for a bit of cash on the side.

You could try posting what you want on one of the freelancer job sites and let people out bid one another, the only downside to that is the best value for money people are likely to be a long way from the North of England so you’re unlikely to get as much input as you might like.

My friend is based in Huddersfield if that makes any difference.

    He is a freelancer.

I reckon its money well spent if you are going to be spending tens of thousands on remodelling.

    Thanks for the offers 🙂

You can get in touch via E mail in profile.

It would be good to see some examples. The big thing for me would be the sitting down stage and the ability to update the plan if things change. So the nearer to Newcastle the better.

To give you and idea on timescale..Sometime before Christmas ( so it’s not urgent)

After doing a few big projects I totally agree.
