    If was after a slimline, easy to use compact camera, and my budget was around £100 where would the hive mind point me? Panasonic Lumix looks good/ticks the boxes on a cursory trawl.

    Slightly over-budget, but in the recommend-what-you-use vein the Canon S90/95/100 are all lovely. Full manual settings as well if you fancy finding out what on earth an F stop is 🙂

    I would save a bit more and look at

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT4
    Pentax MX-1
    Olympus XZ1 and XZ2

    or go second hand (used/ebay)..,

    Second hand Canon S90 or S95 if you can find one. You’ll definitely find a nice S90 for that (I’ve just sold mine for £90).

    The shot below was taken with it handheld at 1/20 so the image stabilisation is pretty good:
