    Your thoughts would be useful.

I am looking to build a winter commute, more tarmac orientated.

    Some basic requirements are:
    1. Probably fully rigid steel
    2. 700c wheels, narrow tyres, 28mm max.
    3. Alfine compatible – slotted dropouts or EBB, not fussed.
    4. full set of rack/mudguard eyes. (must take full mudguards)
    5. disc brake compatible, BB7s.
    6. light and cheap(ish) (moon on a stick?)

All the parts are coming off a Surly KM so not much of the above is open to change as I want to keep it inexpensive or it defeats the object.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Is the surly frame knackered ? Sounds like it’d fit your requirements pretty well itself (except “light” maybe)

No, KM frame is sound. Heavy and ‘dead’ for Tarmac commuting next to a Reynolds Argos summer commute though. Biggest issue for me really is full mudguards for the winter and the KM has defied all my bodges so far.
