I think it sohuld be ok, just want to check what if it is.

Is it ok to run a SRAM Apex 10spd rear mech with a SORA 8speed shifter?

Its had a 9 speed 105 mech running on the 8 speed shifter for a while, but Its given up the ghost.

I assume its the shifter thats the important bit right? and it shouldnt matter what mech you run (within reason).

Sram and Shimano shifters pull a different amount of cable, so no.

No. That simply will not work at all. You need to match the rear mech and shifter. 8/9/10 speed isn’t compatible either, as they all have different numbers of cogs on the same sized freehub it means they are all differently spaced, so need a specific shifter. The only thing you CAN mismatch are cassettes and front mechs.

Any Shimano rear mech should do though shouldn’t it?
    As in 8/9/10 sp

Until recently you could with road mechs (10sp. mtb stuff has a different pull ratio), but I believe some of the latest 10 sp. road mechs also have different pull ratios too.It all gets a bit confusing.

No, it will not work. You can use a 7/8/9 speed Shimano MTB mech with those shifters, or a 7/8/9 speed shimano road mech. Some 10 speed mechs will work as well but be careful as the MTB ones won’t.

It all used to be so simple…
