Hmmmm. Good as an initial introduction to the genre, but very poor soloists and not the finest performances, I would wager.

Deutsche Gramaphone do a very good range of “budget” recordings.

Ooh, I dunno, Flashy; Royal Phil. and Yehudi are mentioned in that list.

Bargain. Great intro, and would make a fantastic shop PA selection.

Don’t try sounding like a ‘buff’, Flashy. DG are some of the finest recordings available.

Bear in mind these are all MP3 files, so not the quality of AIFF CD files.

RB, I was referring to the DG intro range – link here – http://www2.deutschegrammophon.com/webseries/?ID=entree

That collection is a good intro, I agree, I hope it leads to listening to more, fuller works!

    Can I recommend this?

    A glorious work.

    And this;

    The definitive Planets recording, IMO

This is also doing the rounds at Chateau Flash a lot at the mo

Oh, Sorry Flashy! I thought you were being snobbish about DG! Thought it strange, even for you!

Make you right on that Planets recording. I used to have a Halle Orchestra recording of that, on cassette tape! I think I may have to invest in that Berliner/Karajan version.

Free, and excellent: The Isabella Stewart Gardner classical podcasts. There’s a minute or so of talk at the beginning, don’t let that put you off, though…

Mogrim: mmmm. some of that’s going on my usb drive to play at work.
I find classical music is particularly fine for fettling bikes. Plus, the youths can’t stand it… 😈

    I build wheels to Elgar.

    Nothing finer.

bassspine, glad you like it – I’ve got a hard drive filled with it at work 🙂

And the garage stereo is permanently tuned to the Spanish equivalent of Radio 3. Which is indeed excellent for fettling.
