My sister has asked me to be godfather for my nephew. Which is lovely, however I can’t be at the Christening (which apparently is OK, my Dad is standing in to banish the devil for me!) and I would like to get an appropriate present to send.

I’m not all that ‘god-y’ though, so the staples of bibles and things don’t really do it for me…

Anyone given or received anything a bit different, but special for a christening?
Oh, and I’m a bit skint, so nothing over about £50!

Oh, and I am fully aware of the hypocrisy of not being religious but being a godfather (and of having my kids christened too) before anyone points this out to me… 😉

Royal Mint – Christening gifts

This went down very well with my Goddaughter recently. Also a nice boxed/special edition of a children’s book such as Beatrix Potter etc, with a handwritten message from you inside the cover is a nice touch.

As a raving atheist heres my guide to attending christening bashes:

1) Do the parents believe in Jesus and go to church every week?
If so buy some Next gift vouchers or a modest little trinket from a jewellers shop

2) Do the parents not believe in the baby jesus and just want some cutesy pics and a party?
If so buy a bible
Its absolutely priceless seeing the look on their faces when they unwrap it
They know damn well youre taking the piss but what more appropriate present could there be for a solemn religious celebration

Balance bike. Proably a bit little for it yet, but always best to be pregared for when it’s needed.

Traditional pressies are a nice christening blanket, silver spoon, or small tankard. I got a little bible from my auntie ( she died of cancer, so it’s very very precious to me although I’m not especially religious)

I go for first edition kids books from specialist dealer – Noddy/Swallow’s and Amazons etc.
They’re something different, they can read them now/or in a few years and will hopefully appreciate in value as they grow older or become a family heirloom

Something dignified, tasteful and not at all disturbing..

A friend of mine gave her godson a Swiss Army knife and a compass (this was about 15 years ago) 🙂

Seemed a bit unusual at first, but a way of my friend expressing her hope and help, that her godson would have an adventurous and exciting life. They were passed on to him (by his mum) 14 years later as he went away for his first scout camp as a bit of a rite of passage.

I think it was a lovely idea.

Some friends of ours gave one of my kids some books with the same idea in mind. Considering how quickly time flies, it seemed like nothing at all when he began looking at them, then reading them, on his own.
