I remember in one of the magazines that they had a small write up of a chemical metal type filler, that could be used to fill cable rubs in crowns etc. as well as other uses, can anyone remember what it was caled/got any experience of using it ?

Why?
If its to tart somethign up to sell I'd rather buy a cable rubbed fork than one with filler in it!
Ive used this before for some fairly heavy duty stuff, always does the job:
thisisnotaspoon - No, its for my own forks, I've changed the way the rear cable routes/lays and want to now address the slight groove worn into the crown.
A car body filler might work/be what you were after

how big is the groove, it may be fine just painting over it if it's not too large.
If you clean andprepare the surface properly with p80 sandpaper to roughen it up you should get a standard two pack epoxy glue (araldite) to stick well. Roughen this again with some finer sandpaper and the paint will stick if you do it soon (~24hours)
Devcon is the stuff for you.
We use it at work to repair/fill aircraft parts. Complies to a Milspec, so quality stuff.
