  • Cheap Monday-Friday accomodation whilst contracting?

    Hi All,

I’m considering going contracting (as it pays double what I’m on now) but I’m wondering what to do about accomodation. Renting a 1 bed flat seems to cost £10k/year which is too much, and ‘house shares’ seem to be about £5k/year but I won’t really have time to be sociable so would feel awkward amongst a bunch of strangers.

Anyone know of a (cheap) solution?

    Cheers,

    Depends where you are.

I rented a double room in a two bed house from a lass for £300/month all in in Glasgow a few years ago. Pretty cheap & probably paid her mortgage

Tent with wood burner – you can’t get any more STW. I stay away most weeks and camping cost 7.50 a night. Have laptop with DVDs, go to cinema, bike, kayak in the evenings.

Watched TV, played on the internet, slagged off the people I worked with at the time, got horrendously drunk.

Jokingly, she was called my second wife (no, not that way)

I did have a short stay elsewhere before that one aand she was a bunny boiler Kipping in my bed when I was hope at the weekends though

Most contractors i have come across stay at the Travelodge – can be £19 a night under some deals.

I’ve done plenty of Monday to Friday working away from home and have stayed in a variety of places. I get a weekly amount to pay for accomodation but always try and make a little. As mentioned before depending on where you are working Travelodges are a good option. I worked in Oldham for 12 months and there was three I moved between for the best rate. Used to book 6-8 weeks at a time and payed as low as £10 per night, the average probably was £19-£23 per night.

Last year was working in Holbeach Lincolnshire and stayed in a local pub, was basic but got an evening meal rather than breakfast and was only £25 per night. Local no frills pubs are always a good option too.

Final places were bed & breakfasts but these seem to be getting quite expensive now at £30 plus per night.

+1 on the camping, caravan, campervan option. Use the evenings to go ride in strange and unusual places

Great excuse to buy a camper van. Free accommodation during the evenings and something to drive home in.

Finding a good spot to lay up overnight might be a challenge…

On my last project a couple of people each had mobile caravans, once you factor in 7 days a week ground rent if you’re not moving it and electricity and also buying the thing it didnt work out much cheaper than what I was paying at a pub.

Good luck in winter, it gets very cold!
