Long journey today and 1 of kids tablets ran out of battery, but miffed that others was working but driving to France next month and not wanting to happen again.

    Quickest way of getting charge?

    Simple adapter like this?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Griffin-Dual-Twin-2-Port-USB-Car-Cigar-Charger-for-iPhone-4-5-6-Plus-/331556730215?

    Something more exotic like this?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Charger-PowerIQ-Technology-Motorola/dp/B00D82O68Y/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1434309899&sr=8-11&keywords=anker

    Or external power pack?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Ultra-High-Capacity-20800mAh-Technology-Black/dp/B00M0EWED0/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

    Or any other ideas?

Blimey, that’s some power rating – is it some sort of formula 1 KERS system ? 😯

If its an android tablet (eg hudl 2 ) – they can be fussy about mini usb cables – they need to be ‘fast charge’ cables – something to do with a short / resistance on 2 of the data pins.

The Anker chargers are good – well warranty wise anyway.

I have one of these (in black). If this doesnt charge something quickly then it’s a cable related problem imo.

We’ve got power outlets (lighter sockets) under the back of passenger seat – so the kids just plug their tablets into that as needed on a long journey.

We just limit how much screen they have on a journey to an hour.

    Brilliant!

We have a strong candidate for the STW archetype contest!

    Drac what fast charger?

Should have said kids are pretty good, tablets aren’t used a lot, all into outdoors books Lego etc and i spy and other car games often played
However driving from north Coast of Ireland to France is more than 24 hours and I don’t mind them using tablets

Sometimes I find that people make comment that someone is staring at phone/tablet again but they wouldn’t comment if they were reading a book. Kids have books on their tablets and I would tend to read books and papers on phone/ipad

A lot of cheap USB chargers, and USB ports on PCs will only go to 500mA which takes forever to charge a decent tablet. If you can get 1 or 2A then better, though a car charger will struggle.

Some need more voltage. My Dell tablet will charge on regular USB 5V 1 or 2A but takes all day to do it, but the supplied charger is 19.5V 24w but 1.2A yet charges much faster than regular USB (Dell have special support to handle the higher voltage charger).

Ps you can get USB fast charge dongles that short the data connection which for some chargers and on PC ports will convince the device that it’s not data connected, only power and might draw more current than the stock 500mA.

But in a car how can the likes of mashers charger be better than direct to 12v socket with adapter?

    I have one of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AAT3SVE (£8.70)

Lets me power the headrest DVD/movie players (old skool FTW) and charge phones or tablets.
The 2.1A USB out will charge an iPad.

Yeah, but my one goes up to 11 10.5 watts per port 😀

(and perhaps more importantly it plugs in with a 26″ lead, so it can actually reach the kids in the back).

You’re right though – it is an “emerging markets” special – I wouldn’t like to look inside.

Although I have charging options in the car I also keep an Anker battery pack in there as well – incredibly handy to keep around.

My only problem with car chargers was some caused interference with the radio (and to a lesser extent the aux input from the headphone output on the tablet/phone, but my phone seems to supress this when it’s actually playing something, even with the volume off). As a rule the more expensive the less interference and anything from 7dayshop, DX or ebay was rubbish.
