    Just tried to get the rear wheel out and can’t because of the chain, am I missing a trick.

    Take the chain off first. Usual process is move the wheel forwards, lift chain off the cog, pull wheel out of the dropouts.
    If you have a chain tug on holding the wheel back, you’ll need to
    Loosen that first.

    Yes you are missing a trick, slide the wheel forward, use slack in chain to un ship the chain from the chainring, then un ship chain from sprocket, pull the wheel out. Easier to do than explain.
