Dose it matter where they go in relation to the pedal arm?
Will the chain get picked up the same if the rings line up?
    Anyone know.

They’re designed to go a certain way, the big ring has the chain drop pin to stop it dropping behind the crank, the middle has ramps and pins to help shifting. It will generally matter least on the granny ring.

The middle and granny ring usually have a ‘tab’ which is to line up with the crank arm. Shown at around 8 o’clock in this picture.
