Hi all, first post for me,

As much as I keep me chain clean and well lubed, there is a lot of surface rust on it. It’s a Shimano HG93 9-speed.

Any tips for removing this surface rust? Remove chain and bathe it in white spirit???

    Cheers

    Hello Colin…welcome to the forum

If it cleaned and well lubed, it shouldn’t be getting rusty. Personally I wouldn’t worry about a bit of surface rust as its going to get dirty anyway: lube it up and go ride!

external rust wont affect chain life or efficiency.

As fartproof helpfully suggests, more lube may avoid rust, though for the same reason there’s no benefit to efficiency in lubing the outside of the chain

Yeah, I could never understand why it got rusty on the surface when the links and moving parts are perfectly cleaned and lubed after every other ride.
