I have just bought a lizard skin jumbo chain stay protector for my Genesis Core 50. The problem is the rear mech cable is routed along the chain stay – half exposed and half with an outer and a lug separating the two.

what the best way of mounting the lizard skin under/over that lot without affecting the operation of the gears or am I wasting my time?

    Full-length outer.

This worked for me last time I had this issue:

    – Unhook the cables from the guide (shift to easiest gear then don’t pedal and shift all the way to hardest to get some slack in the cable).

    – Put the protector on and find out where the cable guide is underneath it.

    – Cut a small hole in the protector and stick it back on with the cable guide poking through.

    – Put the cable back in the guide (over the protector) and shift back to a normal gear.

You should be left with the cable running over the now protected chainstay.
