    It would appear that my middle chain ring has nearly had it and is in need of replacement, the winter road grime has taken its toll.

    I bought one of these – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=3324 to replace it, but when I handed it over to the shop they said it was for single speed applications and wouldn’t work. It that correct? It doesn’t have any ramps or pins on it, but it appears to be a middle chain ring replacement to me?

    The crankset I want to fit it to is this one – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=23243 bought last time as a cheapish way to replace all the rings and BB.

    they have cropped teeth so they could be shiftable ones.

    Hmmm, mine doesn’t look exactly like that, it looks like this –

    It states middle 8/9/10sp chainring on the packaging though?

    Looks like a ring for a 1x set up. So shifting is likely to be poor on the front. You probably need a new chain and cassette too!!

    I’ve got another cassette and chain if needs be, so no worries there.

    Have I bought the wrong chain ring, or have CRC sent me the wrong chain ring, or is the chain ring I have packaged incorrectly?

    I mean it says ‘middle’ on the packet – surely that means it’s intended for the middle of a set of chain rings?

    it could just be they mean it goes in the middle position. If it has no profiled teeth/ramps then it’s probably not going to shift very nice and could just be a 1×9/1×10 ring.

    Looking at the product code on the photo above, its definitely a mono ring according to the middleburn website;
