Just had the British Gas man round to fix my central heating system the radiators were warm when only the hot water was selected, diagnosed as a faulty 3 port valve fixed under 3 star cover.

Anyway he commented that the system has some sludge in it and recommended a power flush £650!

Does any one know what options I have that cost a lot less than £650

set aside a day and enlist some help to use this stuff

I think that is in the BG repairman’s contract to say that.

went down homebase and bought some flushing chemicals for about £20

Spent the saving on bike parts…. 😉

Whack some Fernox through the system.

Our system was so clogged with crap that we ended up taking off some of our radiators, washing them through with a hose, then putting them back on again. Managed to revive 3 dead radiators doing that.

£650…crikey, I fitted my boiler for less than that.!!!
Fernox, & a length of cheap hose from Wilkos.
Just keep refilling-draining, refilling-draining till it runs nice & clear. Then take off each rad & flush upside down with a hose.
You’ll probably need to play with each valve for a few weeks to get the right balance again (unless you’ve TRV’s).

Cheers for the info, one question tho reading the instructions which say you must Drain and flush the system thoroughly to remove chemical and debris three times. Then use a rinse test meter.

Did you guys buy a meter or just rinse the system alot?

You could fit a magnaclean and hope it catches all the crap.
