  • Centerlock ring too close to the QR axel – can't get to it. Advice?

Fitted the front as usual with centerlock ring going on no problem.

The rear wheel won’t allow the cassette tool to reach the centerlock ring.

Rear QR nuts on the hub won’t let me get the cassette tool on.
    (Not using a thru-axel.)

Never had a problem in the past.

Is there a special tool to buy?

    QR nuts ?

QR is usually just a skewer or similar that you just undo slide out. Not sure why anything would be in the way once removed.

    Photo?

I wonder if he means the end caps / lock nuts on the hub rather than the skewer itself?

Has this before, found a different cassette removal tool that fitted.

Yes garage-dweller, sorry if I was vague.

A bit of searching on Google images and found a similar problem:

Ok off to bike shop to see if my cassette tool has been updated etc. Hope I don’t need to buy a different lock-ring or special tool available from mail order.

Looks like you probably want a thru-axle style lockring – Shimano HB-SM20 is the standard part. Fits with an external BB spanner.

I had a similar problem. I solved it with a different cassette removal tool with a longer reach – alternatively try your LBS they tightened it up whilst I waited

I took Jonathan’s approach when I got a front hub that came with the wrong lockring on it; the externally keyed ring is easier to use in my opinion.

This was never going to work:

You need something like this http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-maintenance/bike-tools/ice-toolz-cassette-lockring-tool

    Evans do something similar too

    Thanks guys.

    Conclusion:

Either find a a tool with a slimmer and longer shank or mail order a Shitamo external oversize lockring that allows you to fit on larger axels.

Damn my bike build is taking ages after one headache to another – not very patient lol.

    Thanks again everyone.

Hope this helps others as you may need these for some wheels that can use QR or Thru-axels.
