The lock nut on my new cassette says 40Nm. That really is quite a big ‘pull’. What do most people do, cos when un-installing old cassettes most come apart with just a ‘firm’ pressure. If you didn’t have a torque wrench I would say there was a BIG difference between what you’d feel was tight and the 40Nm, especially as the lock nut is actually so flimsy

Torque meters are gay and only for the mechanically inept on bikes.

i don’t go anywhere near 40nm.

I go to hand tight then i put a little tiny bit of weight on it to turn the lockring about 1/8th turn

I only use a 6 inch long cassette lock ring tool anyway.

BTW, the lockring is toothed, so it won’t come undone, even with the thin anti bond washer between the two surfaces.

Yes, just tighten it up a few clicks, don’t mash it, just like all things on a bike.

Oh I took it literally and pulled fairly hard on a 12″ spanner

I wonder of thatd why some people get their free hubs mashed by cassettes

Why wouldn’t you use the correct torque?

40Nm is not to difficult to acheive with a decent socket handle, its the equivalent of 4 bags of sugar off a 1m spanner IIRC.

I’ve always thought it a bit too much TBH, given the fine thread/amount of thread on the lockring.

Keep tightening and stop approximately 2Nm before the threads strip.
