Changing over my seatpost this evening and the toothpaste tube carbon paste dispenser that i had has been stood on by one of the anklebiters. The old post was pretty mucky so by the time i cleaned out the sh*t from the seat tube ther's not much left for lubrication - can I use anything else or does it HAVE to be carbon paste?

Well, obviously! I assumed you knew that. I mean, who doesn't?
if you use anything else, it will snap, the carbon fibres will get into your blood and kill you. I read it on the internet.

Don't use normal grease, as it can cause the carbon to swell IIRC
If you have nothing specific, just leave it clean, and just do it when you do get some. It's not going to seize overnight.
