Ok – so its old BMW!

What would a 1998 523i with sub 60k on the clock and 12 months MOT be worth? Private sale from someone they know.

Its for elderley family and I think the tax and running costs make it a mistake. Tyres are all good, which is one positve.

Any experiences of running an old motor like this?

Any suggestions for bangornomics, preferably smaller than a 5 series, preferably auto?

Check to see if the indicators work and replace the steering wheel with a crap one just to be safe

Depends on the condition really, but I’d say £3kish if it’s as good as it ought to be with those miles. I ran a 110k 528i last year for about 12 months or so and it was pretty faultless. An E39 is a lovely car to drive and own. Check that it runs well and idles smoothly since it’ll have a Nikasil motor (if it’s good now though it won’t be an issue in the future). Cooling systems are more robust on the early cars like that one, but can have issues. Lots of buying guides online and parts are common.

I’d buy another one without hesitation.

Not worth 3k as long as my arse points down. 1k at best, it’s a nice car, but nowt special especially at near 20 years old.
Cracking car for bangornomics for someone.

    Still a great car.

    If it’s solid, LPG it.

Done that to a few E39’s before I recently bought a brand new car and miss the E39 quiet and fun handling.

£800 sounds about right. £3000 will get you something a lot newer.

Low mileage cars seem to fetch a big premium these days. But doesn’t mean an awful lot on a 20 year old car. 3k seems way expensive. Even with full service history from a dealer that would be steep. Half that with FSH and mint condition. Anything under that would sound about right, depending on the car.

Might have been worth 3 k had it been a 3series drift sled.

Fools n their money and all that.

Anyone paying 3k for the car in the op needs head looking at.

Have a look on autotrader, they’re surprisingly expensive. Whether they actually sell at that price is another question…

I’d rather have a 120k Yaris or jazz for the same price

Worth £800 all day long to be honest. Good cheap used cars are becoming hard to come by. Should be a pretty reliable car, there are hundreds if not thousands of BMW specialists out there nowadays so repairs won’t be as expensive as you would think. For £800 you could buy and run that car for many years and Still sell it for little loss if any at all.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think it is pre-banded tax so despite being a big thirsty petrol motor it isn’t anything like as bad as you might think. About £250ish now???

Its still available if appeals to anyone? Family sent for an 05 Saab for the same cash. Better buy for them. Really shocking what sub one grand will buy in the Saab market as well – not sure I’m ever paying decent cash for a car again…
