2010 1.8 DTCi SMax. 88k on the clock.

Moving off in first gear I sometimes get a “screech”, but only at revs just above tick over. More or less revs and there is no noise.

    No funny smells.

No evidence of slipping as it pulls normally at low and high speed.

    No vibration, or other noise.

Shall I brace myself for a whopping bill?

Or child. It certainly won’t be a bike.

I got a screech like that from my 2004 Focus – same engine – that turned out to be the coupling between alternator and the pulley that drives it.

Is it definitely the transmission? If theres no slipping of the clutch could it be a drive belt to the alternator or power steering having a bit of a squeak?

Try cracking an egg into the radiator

    Sounds cheaper than a clutch!

Yup, sounds like something belt / pulley related

Potentially a failing/failed Clutch Release Bearing.

They make the noise as you drive off because their knackers catch on the wipers

Could be contamination on the clutch plate.
