The clue is in the name... "Fully comprehensive"
Though the issue you've got is that even though the repair might be more than your excess, look at the long term cost to you of losing and accrued no claims bonus (if not protected) which could cost you hundreds of pounds, per year, for several years!
What got vandalised and have you had a quote to fix it yet?

Don't forget that insurance companies ask you "Have you suffered a loss or had a claim in the last x years?"
What the mean by this is that they will load your next renewal if you have had a loss - even if you didn't claim.
So, beware if you are calling them to check anything, as they will record the fact that you have "had a loss"

Claiming will cost you your excess and most likely a bit extra on your next year's premium. But some insurers have special conditions surrounding vandalism claims - I think Direct Line don't reduce your ncd, maybe??

Some do, some don't. My very first port of call would be a friendly call to the insurance company with a question about your coverage. Don't mention what's happened at all, just a call to ask where your stand and what would happen should a theoretical act of vandalism to your car occur, and how it would affect your policy in the future if at all.
Don't mention anything about it yet, insurance companies can be very sneaky, it's a tough game to make money in so they'll be switched on.

To get a good indication of what it may cost you could always go do some quotes on GoCompare with and without a vandalism claim, and compare the two.

Being careful to put in close but not correct values, I reckon they can easily tally up the quotes...
