  • Car Body Repair Advice…new wing or filler?

After cunningly driving my (2 week old) car in to a bollard, i could do with a little a body work advice 😳

I will be taking the car to a local non franchise well equipped body shop.

He is preparing a quote for repairing the wing and bumper, but also a quote for replacing the wing.

I’m not sure what would be preferable….a 2 week old car with body filler or a 2 week old car thats had a new wing.

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

    Neil.

A new wing would be better. Repairs tend to show up a few years down the line.
If you are really picky engine bays sometimes have matt paint so make sure the inner wing edge matches.
Your new car may not be that new anyway. We once had a new car get damaged and on repairing it found a previous repair. So two paint jobs before it got in the show room.

Thanks….I will just find out what the price difference is.

I’m going to guess £500 for a new wing.

I appreciate it is new and you’ll want it to look as new but I’d be tempted to just get it pulled out by a dent specialist so it was fairly neat then live with it. I’d hate to a £500 repair then prang it again.

The wings are defiantly metal on this one, I know it’s only a Berlingo but I hate the thought of it not being quite right.

A decent body shop should be able to pull/push most of the dent out, light filler, 2k build primer and then finish.

If they are even thinking of just filling the hole with filler just walk away and find another body shop.

if the body shop also aren’t sure the best way of doing it, then again, maybe best to walk away.

It doesnt look like the paint has split, so it should be able to be carefully re-shaped by a pro without having to replace the wing.

That’s too stretched to guarantee a completely invisible repair so a new wing is the only option

(I own two bodyshops & wouldn’t let anyone waste their time trying to repair that)

What do you think is a fair price to replace the wing, and fix the tiny mark on the edge of the bumper?

Obviously difficult without actually seeing it but the wings are around £97, labour would be around £230, paints & materials approx £60-70.. so around £400+vat I’d reckon

Leave it as a reminder, and only get it repaired when you sell the car (and if you px they’ll only knock 50% of the cost off anyway) – saves paying again for when you do it next time.

If money is tight buy a wing ask them to paint it then fit it yourself.

If I can get it fixed to a high standard for that sort of money I will be happy or less unhappy.

Get it sorted asap. Damage = driver doesnt care.

Is it yours or lease? Lease do it proper. Itll show in 2yrs.

Me? I would trawl ebay for breakers or source a aftermarket pattern part then backstreet garage fit/spray.

If it is a lease car – pull it out as much as you can (remove liner) or leave if you park in okish areas. Then sort (along with a chipsaway guy) right atthe end of the lease before handback.

Thats what I’m doing with mine on the bits n pieces.

Drive one of these fast – no one will share a lane or roadspace with you as I found out 8)

also good for when you need to change lanes in a queue…. playing shit car demolition derby.

my experiance is that no one challenges ratty white vans or loud old land rovers BUT they wont let a very tidy newish golf into the queue.
