I have a Canon 300D with the stock lens and a 75-200 L lens that I have had for about 5 years. Recently the L lens seems to be over exposing (i.e. snow/breaking waves come out with no detail and is too bright) but is fine in every other respect. Stock lens does not seem to be doing the same.
Can lenses go wrong like this or is it likely to me messing up the camera settings?

Pop the camera on ‘full auto’ and see how the shot comes out?

might be sticky diaphram, but not sure how to check.

Certainly i would take a wee bit of alcohol on a coton bud to the contact points on lens and camera body and see if that helps also.

stick a white teddy (or similar) out on your garden table and take a shot in P mode, put in -2 exposure compensation and take the same photo (as close as you can). If the exposure of your picture doesn’t change, something funny is going on.

For best results try it in A and S modes too.

If it’s a sticky aperture test it by…

1) Take a photo wide open
2) Stop down as much as the lens allows (f32?) and take the same photo

If 1 is OK and 2 is overexposed you have oil on the blades.

If they’re both overexposed it’s something else.
