  • Can you use a rapid rise rear mech with a 10 speed set up?

I have got rapid rise rear mechs on my bikes (which i like) but have been thinking about when i upgrade to 10 speed (when i have to replace worn out parts).

Is it possible to run 10 speed with rapid rise or do i have to stick with 9 speed?

They stopped making rapid rise, so you’re stick.

you would have to use a 10speed road (ultegra I think) flat bar shifter with a 9 speed rr rear mech as the mtb shifters have a different pull ratio. I looked into this, but I decided I valued a clutch mech (10speed only) more than rapid rise

edit: one thing to note, I found that 9 speed rr mechs seemed to struggle with shifting onto a 36t cog when I tried an 11-36 cassette- but the spring in mine wasn’t great.

I’ve got 3 or 4 XTR rapid rise 9 speed rear mechs available if you want some spares 🙂
