Is it possible to mix this way around? Or do all the components have to be the same for 9 and 10 speed.

    Yup.

(EDIT: though you might get more rubbage on the big ring when the chain is on the little/mid ring and the higher gears at the back.)

Why would you get more rubbage?

    It'll be fine.

done it on the wife's bike with a 10sp ultegra chainset and 9sp group and it do's rub a little bit in the small front ring and the two smallest sprockets at the back
it dos'nt rub on the front mech though but on the rivets on the big ring it still works ok bacause she dos'nt cross her chain in the small ring anyway but i think the spaceing is narrower on 10sp chainsets a fraction
