Petrol is much cheaper than a couple of years ago.
You do know, don’t you, that we’re going to check these things. You really could save yourself a lot of hashtags by five seconds’ Googling before posting.
Petrol is in fact much more expensive than a couple of years ago. It is, however, cheaper than it was four years ago.
Average price of a litre of unleaded now is 120.1p. In previous Februaries for the last ten years:
2017 120.1p
2016 102.0p
2015 108.0p
2014 129.6p
2013 137.5p
2012 135.5p
2011 128.9p
2010 112.2p
2009 90.4p
2008 104.4p
2007 86.9p

It’s been falling year on year since 2013. If that trend continued then it should have been sub-£1/litre by now, and yet notably it’s suddenly 18p dearer than it was this time last year. I wonder why that might be. What might’ve happened between now and last February that would cause the cost of imported fuel to have spiked by 20%, hmm?
It’ll be interesting to do this comparison again, oh, I don’t know, to pick a time entirely at random, maybe sometime around June.
