Go and see ‘The Lock In’ if it’s playing near you – currently on tour.

I seem to have a preference for singers of the distaff persuasion, currently can’t get enough of Natalie Merchant, she’s so talented and mixes it up across so many genres it’s incredible, and then there’s the most winsome and angel voiced Jackie Oats, saw her at Celtic Connections a few years ago and then at the Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival after that. Her ‘Hyperboreans’ album is truly sublime and could induce emotions from the most hardened of hearts.
    +1 Joni Mitchell.
    Thats all.

Mucked, have you checked out Natalie’s earlier work with 10,000 Maniacs? Sublime stuff.

The MTV unplugged with 10000 Maniacs is pretty good.

As richmars says, and Blind Man’s Zoo.
Paper Aeroplanes are really worth looking up, beautiful songs and music, and great live.

Blind Man’s Zoo is 10,000 maniacs at their finest.

I’ve still got my Blind Man’s Zoo tour tee kicking around somewhere, I’ll have to dig it out and start wearing it again.

On the bluesy end of the spectrum, but I love this guy, and this is one of my favourite tracks of his. Lyric sounds like it’d appeal to a few on here, too.

Thea Gilmore is someone else worth checking out, live and recorded. She’s recorded thirteen albums so far, and the latest is lovely; it’s a bunch of songs that Thea was asked to record by the estate of Sandy Denny, from fragments left behind by Sandy. The album’s called Don’t Stop Singing, and this is Glistening Bay:

Martin Simpson is playing at Reeth Memorial Hall in the next couple of weeks. It’s a Friday night. Get along and I’d be happy to take you guide you around Swaledale on the Friday or the Saturday.

On a youtube Thackray journey at the moment, “…By Booze, by Muker, by Gunnerside, by Crackpot, Go Little Swale, Go headlong down, Down through your stoney-faced meadows…”

I’m not at home but I’ll try and remember to post a link to what’s on in Reeth, if you are planning a trip north you could be here for one of the music events. Places to stay are the the Dales Bike Centre and loads of local pubs. Just so you know Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy play at least once a year sometimes twice. For a little p,ace we get some great acts.

Nice Nic Jones song by the way, perhaps one of the UKs finest and underrate singers.

I spent a great week with my girlfriend (now wife) up above Gunnerside in a cottage in High Bends. Great spot, great riding. We will definitely be back. And we’ll make sure we catch some music in Reeth next time, too.

    Thanks,

    Ed

I love listening to Christy Moore and Luke Kelly, beautiful voices. Regularly listen to CM’s 1964-2004 box set is particularly excellent. Bit of anti Thatcher/Reagan/Tory action going on which may offend some but not me.

From his Planxty days and opening track on ‘The Woman I loved So Well’:
