  • Can someone explain square taper cranks to me

I have an old pub/hack bike that I have made into a single speed at a total cost of £5.

Basically I wanted some cranks on the front that dont have the 3 rings on – someone gave me a set that I could remove the rings from leaving only 1 ring at the desired size. Anyway it appears to go to far onto the taper and the end of the crank where the pedal is hits the chainstay.

Why is this – are cranks for square taper BB different sizes (as in the profile of them – not length – so the distance away from the bike outwards)

Also does anyone have a 170 mm one that wont hit my chainstay and I can change the ring size on.

For now Im using the original triple s2300 triple crankset and running on the middle ring.

Bloody old bikes are just as bad as new ones for different standards

Different axle lengths. Axle length is dependent on the crank – would usually be c.113mm but could require as much as 126mm.

Could be the old cranks are just knackered and the taper all the way up. I’ll look in my bits box tomorrow if I get the chance I may have some.

You could try a BB with a longer axle?

Could be the old ISO/J.I.S. interchangeability issue:-

As above, most likely that you need a bottom bracket with a longer axle. CRC have some cheap brackets so if it’s just a hack bike you could just get the longest one you can find as I don’t suppose you’ll be too worried about the chainline within reason. Just measure you bottom bracket shell width to get the right bracket which will be 68 or 73mm
