Looking for campsite suggestions in the Devon/Cornwall area, requirements are: -
1 hour from the M5 corridor
must accept dogs
would like: -
allowed to have fires
somewhere close by to buy scrumpy cider 
beach is always good

That rules out Cornwall then unless you drive well over 100 from the end of the M5!
Try the area of South Devon around/near Exmouth or the South Hams nearish Plymouth - stunning coastline, a few campsites, good pubs.

Plenty of nice ones around Croyde/Woolacombe/Ilfracombe area. Stayed at Warcombe Farm (look on ukcampsite) at weekend. Fabulous site. No fires though. Sites that allow fires are bloody few and far between these days sadly.

N Devon gets mingingly busy in season and the drive from the M5 is a nightmare.

2nd Warcombe Farm. Nice site.
very few of the mainstream sites allow fires now and those that do tend to get booked up months in advance by middle-class glampers with matching Cath Kidston teepees and picnic rugs.

We can be at a completely secluded beach in 25 mins on a bank holiday weekend...
Even this beach (about 35 mins away) never has more than a handful of people right in season:
A boat is helpful to get to them though.

It's not Porthcurno - but it's very nearby. A hideous climb down (for anyone scared of heights!) puts most people off.
Other beaches are only accessible by boat or a very long walk - not very handy for most but lovely for some. Had two days off last week so four days in a row of nipping out on the boat - most people we saw on a beach in blazing sunshine? Two. Compare that to surfing on Sunday - total number on Fistral beach? About 10 million.
Seriously though, if anyone wants to know where to go, just ask - know S Devon and Cornwall very well.

MM - we took our little one down and my Mum (aged 56) made it fine. But hairy though.

I'd like to think we could have taken our daughter down, but shes so ruddy clumsy and doesn't concentrate on what she's doing she falls over her own shadow!! (and shes 7!)

Another vote for Warcombe Farm, spent two 2week holidays there. Love that site, no fires though, but very nice scrumpy from the wee shop in Mortehoe.

Noongallas in west cornwall. Rudementary facilities but fires allowed. 10mins form s coast beaches 20 to north coast. Beutiful wood below campsitre and many mtb options from here (I live at the other end of the woods). Otherwise call penzance tourist info and they'll send you a list of sites.
P.s. surf-mat... at most a thin crowd of maybe 10 on Sunday a.m. then just me and a mate pm sesh. And the 10 was a very crowded surf fo me based on recent sessions. Like you say you gotta know where to look! ; )
