  • Cabinet doors in Kitchen – info on painting or replacing ?

Paying to replace a kitchen is not viable. Its for the property I am trustee of.

    Has anyone:
    – tried painting kitchen cabinet doors ?
    – just replaced the doors only, not the units ?

The present doors are white laminate. I have tried all sorts of things to clean them, with only moderate success. The actual plastic laminate seems to be embedded with staining in places.

I have never liked the idea of painting kitchen cupboard doors as I have tended to think it will have a rubbish finish and then wear and chip really fast. What are your experiences? What paint to use or avoid?

Replacing just the doors is also an option but may prove too expensive to be viable as funds are limited. Anyone recommend any companies to look at / avoid ? Its around 8 doors and 4 drawer fronts.

    Thanks.

    You’re right.

Have you tried somewhere like Wickes or B&Q? Kitchen Cabinets are pretty much all standard sizes.

Replacing doors is fine so long as it is a reasonably modern kitchen but is quite expensive. I had an older design kitchen and they wanted £1500 for new doors.

One cheaper option is to see if you can find out where the kitchen was from and order replacement doors.

Painting is possible but doesn’t tend to look good for long and is a slow job. Use a good primer.

Do they just sell the doors? There is no way whole units can be funded and to be honest, I dont want to get involved anyway in replacing the whole thing as i would have to fit it myself due to costs. The insides are ok. Just unscrewing a door and sticking another one on is about the limit with this, which may be to expensive to do anyway.

B+Q do, as do Ikea IIRC.

Kitchen fitted a minimum of 20 years ago. Its not knocked about, it all works ok, just covered in exterior staining in places.

Mentally worn out today with the hassle of dealing with this place to be honest. Have got nothing but grief and no practical help at all from the other trustee. Already cleaned off 20 years + of chain smoking from the place. Not so much the disgusting work that gets me down, its dealing with the people involved who do nothing at all to help but can always helpfully explain how I could have done everything so much better…. scream! No offer to help though.

Gotta go out now and look for cheap replacement curtain rails. The old ones are white plastic and I cant get the staining off of those either.

At least I don’t have to wear a face mask in there now as all the walls and ceilings have been cleaned/sealed and the carpets have been machined washed 3 times as too expensive to replace those.

Expect I will cheer up again later, but sometimes it just gets to me. I do feel pleased at the progress I have made with it.

Did not know IKEA did just doors. Gotta go there this week, will take a look.

Will check out B&Q. Hate it more than IKEA as its huge, you walk miles but they never have what you want in stock, just half of it!

Actually, maybe its the same management! 🙂

There’s a good place in Sheffield I’ve used for decades now:

I’d give them a ring and see if they have your sizes in stock

If it’s ingrained staining, try some Y10. Its designed to remove the yellow staining you get ingrained in the gellcoat of boat’s GRP hulls & works wonders.

Online places that specialise in doors. You could also try getting the doors from a secondhand kitchen, but you’d have to watch for the door widths and which side the handles are on.

I have just finished painting mine (well maybe two weeks ago). The Laminate on some of the doors was peeling off, looking old at tatty so it was time to go. You can get the finish as good as you want to be honest. I started the first couple of doors meticulously back sanding and being very careful to get it looking perfect, then I realised it was all a vast improvement over the old laminate so just battered on.

Very happy with the results. Will try to find the paint for you.

Edit: Used V33 cupboards and cabinets renovation paint.

I’ve used International cupboard door paint in my old house that i now rent out and its worked pretty well.

Prepare the surface properly and it covers well. I does chip after a while so it needs patching up between tennants but it ok.

The doors are solid wood and good quality but just look crap and painting them just brightens the place up.

Not sure to your taste, or more hassle than its worth, but I had old wooden shaker style doors on my cabinets, I wanted to make them look a little more contemporary, so I had coloured (grey) perspex cut to shape and glued onto each door and drawer front having already painted the edge of the doors in a different shade of grey, I was a little worried but I’ve been told they look great and I’m happy with them.

If they are plane flat doors how about using some vinyl wrap? Lots of finishes available and pretty cheap on eBay.

There was a massive thread on here 2 or 3 years ago about painting kitchen cupboards.
The guy who did it, did a decent explanation of what you needed – there was quite a specialist undercoat that apparently made it all work a lot better….

I’m rubbish at finding threads, but I’ll have a search….

We used ESP undercoat on laminate doors followed by farrow and ball cupboard paint. Still looking fine after two years.Just have to train yourself to use the handles to open and close the doors.

Painting is a doddle. I used a £20 tin of ronseal kitchen cupboard paint on my doors. Took them all off, removed handles, cleaned, sanded, cleaned again, painted, put them back on. Painted all the trim bits with same paint whilst doors off. Just enough for small kitchen in the tin. Everyone has commented how good they look now. No chipping/scratches so far (6months later). So £20 well spent as far as I’m concerned. My friend used Valspar spray paint which was £11 a can and she used loads of them.

And whilst I was on with that I made new worktops out of reclaimed scaffold boards…

we painted ours – used some regular oil based paint which started to chip after a year or so, could do with a touch-up now.

however, I was chuffed with the difference it made – we also replaced the handles with some wooden ones for about £1 each and it all looked so much fresher. Total spend was about £30, well worth it IMO, even with the need to touch up occasionally.
