Just looking for a decent deal on forks for my Soul and finding the prices a bit salty - it occured to me that it may almost be worth buying a bike, keeping the forks and selling off the rest for parts. Do the economics of this stack up do you reckon? Shouldn't do but I reckon it could be viable

Certainly should stack up if you can find some older bikes on sale somewhere - especially as component prices rocketed this year. Any 09 (or even 08) models you can find are worth looking at.

Can be a great way to get a value bike.
Say for example this:

Fox and full XT for 800 quid.
Check compatibility though of parts.

bikefish85 - that's what I'm talking about. If I were to buy that on C2W (laying aside the usual moral objections) then I reckon I've got some decent forks and enough spare parts to keep the Soul running nicely for a couple of years for ~£450 spread across 12 easy to manage payments!

Car and motorcycle breakers do this all the time. Although the bike market is different.

watch out for OEM forks, more the weight and less the spec

yea, I have already done exactly that. My 'genius' had been sat doing nothing whilst my soul was on order. took delivery beginning of this week and am almost complete.
bad iphone img, but check it out

apart from the headset, seatpost, shims and cable outer it worked a dream! just need to figure out where to cut the fork which scares me a little!
