Recently had a small inheritance, decided it was not enough to get a better bike than I’ve got, so spent it on parts to upgrade my hardtail.

Have now seen a bike I recently rode and enjoyed in the sales for the same amount.

Have also just realised that my lad is now big enough – and riding well enough – to inherit my current hardtail.

    D’oh!

Now, I could ‘fess up, get that bike for me, give laddo my old one with a couple of the upgrades, and use the other upgrades (and another sale bike I’ve spotted) to finally give MrsMC a properly sorted bike adapted for her disability.

Except I don’t have the £1500 or so it would cost me, plus the probable divorce costs as well. MrsMC is hoping to throw all our savings and disposable income for the next 3 years at a new car this lunchtime.

Cheer me up with your tales of purchasing stupidity…..

Edit – Well, not stupidity, I didn’t know the bike or the sales would happen.

The 12 month lease on a house where about a month later realised I didn’t want to be, that ends in 2 weeks…
That and certain other big life decisions…

Sage words which I tend to live by… Unfortunately my missus doesn’t, so she’s dwelling on the ‘what if’scenarios more than just enjoying what she’s got half the time…

Apparently we need an extension now…

Four years ago, pre kids I had a chance to buy this:

18,000 miles. For £30k. Probably twice that now.

I bought some Trinity Exploration shares instead. Currently worth about £200.

    Nevermind eh

bonus cheque in pocket, on way home went looking for a garage that specialised in 2CV’s somewhere above Holmfirth, couldn’t find it (pre google maps)- wouldn’t have really dented the cheque much but once home got lost in general finance considerations 😥 as said above though don’t look back

    Sure, don’t blame yourself.

2009. The shares in my then employer hit rock bottom and I tried to persuade my wife to delay the new kitchen for a bit so we could buy a few. She wasn’t for budging. We’d have no mortgage now if we’d done that.

In the 10 years I worked in RBS I trousered about 45k in bonuses and a 15k redundancy payout, I could have saved some of that, I could have taken in shares (okay they’re worth sfa now) I could have bought my own place for about 75% of what they cost now, but I spent it on… Lords knows what, I can’t really remember much, 1 bike for 4000, a TV for 900 and a car for 1300 is about all I can remember, still easy come, easy go eh?

Now 5 years after I left I’m looking at giving up my disposal cash for 12 months to buy a house.

Just lowered the saddle on my bike and watched Jnr riding up and down shouting “This is so nice!”

When i turned 21 i was given a cheque for £1500 from a saving policy my parents set up for me. I woke the next morning and thought i’d buy shares in Apple Computers. This was in ’91 when most of the world had never heard of Apple (i’d been using macs for a few years at this point) and they were going through a bad spell so shares were cheap. Now i’ve never been the investing type so the fact that it even crossed my mind was a bit weird. Anyway, i spent the money travelling around Egypt and had a great time but recently looked into how much the shares i didn’t buy would be worth. 😯

Too many to list. Latest in haste decision is up for sale on Pinkbike.com. Most of my cash has been wasted on cars and modifying them. I remember a lovely 10k bill to put a Honda engine in the back of a lotus Elise a few years back and that wasn’t the end of it! Bloody quick tho 😯 !

Beyond that, not buying shares when I should have done, lack of pension (again, money spent on cars) etc. About the only sensible thing I have done with money is buy a house that will be worth a fortune in the very near future when they have finished the cross rail. I’ve jinxed it now…

In 1985 a mate and I nearly clubbed together to buy a mint condition 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600GTA Stradale. It was £10000. That was a lot of cash in 1985, but it was a lovely car. Equivalent of about £29000 now

They are worth up to £150000 now apparently. Even copies based on steel bodied cars are worth anything up to £50000

That almost new Straggler for £480 on Gumtree last week.

Just round the corner, right size too, but I’m after a Disc Trucker and couldn’t justify both.

Someone got one hell of a bargain.

Totally bottling going to final interview for Police when I was about 19, I’d breezed through all the other parts for selection and just fell apart on the day.

I had had some terrible news that week, and not turning up that day still haunts me.

If my youngest had been born on the 39th of May and not the 3rd, I’d have had 5 and the bonus ball a few years back.
