    Anybody done this?

Tempted to buy a sports car to enjoy but don’t want to buy a lemon or stuck with a car I don’t need in winter.

We struggled to find a decent MR2 but eventually did last week, all the good condition convertibles are getting sold fast at the moment. Plenty of bad ones about. If you factor in buying higher then selling lower in the winter and don’t mind losing the difference why not. I did the reverse buying an MX5 in December and selling it in June made a few hundred (after I factored in my fuel, tax and insurance) We intend to keep the MR2 though it’s been cherished.

Mmmm, Buy when they are expensive and everyone is buying.

Sell when they are cheap and everybody is selling.

I can see a slight gaff in your business plan.

For that reason, I’m out 😉

I could buy to keep – yep should have bought one in winter.

    MR2 – will someone 6ft 2 fit?

I test drove a Puma last week – couldn’t get into it as I was too tall for it 🙁

Sisters boyfriends 6’5 just gets in MR2, struggled more in MX5. I think you can stick the seat father back in the MR2 and the door handle doubles as a handle to help get out. He said he would add a flat bottomed wheel if he were to buy one. I’m only 5’9 so no issues here 🙂

The flaw in your plan is that the summer has already been and gone, and now is the wrong time to be buying a summer sports car!

Wait until Novembe/December time and it can make £1k + difference dependant obviously on the value of the car, and yes if you buy in the winter and then wait to the following spring to sell you will not loose much money at all if you buy the right car

I would hardly call a Puma a summer fun sports car, they are just a Fiesta with a different body.

You need open top fun in the summer, MX5/S2000/Suzuki Cappuccino (yes you would fit in) Elise/VX220/Boxter

    POSTED 56 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

There’s one down my road for £1000 sills are rusty though, I wouldn’t buy it. Condition is everything with MX5’s. Mine was a 2003 and the sills were gone as it looked like it had never been garaged, my mate took it in PX at his garage I paid a bit more than the PX had some fun in it then got rid during that 1 week heatwave (possibly that was summer) the MR2 we have now is lovely. I much prefer it to the MX5 but MX5’s are alot of fun, I wouldn’t have one unless it was going to be garaged.

my mate bought an early 90s mazda (N reg?) MX5 1.8 (120ps) with 170k on it (but FULL mazda SH), an ebay replacement soft top, for £750 with 12months T&T. I very nearly bought it as it drove great, nothing seemingly wrong with it. And when he gets bored of it he’ll shove it on ebay for 99p/free listing weekend and see what he gets for it. Aces.

Soft top Suzuki 4 x 4 Rhino, roof down in the summer, 4wd in the floods of the summer, driving merrily through the deadly fallen leaves of Autumn and snow of winter…

And still be able to carry your hairdressing kit as well…

What could possibly go wrong, how hard could t be etc etc

Just don’t make it a Robin Hood. Absolute bag of cr@p. Be OK with one of the better quality locosts though.

Do it. I bought a 1978 MG Midget on ebay, then sold it 2 months later for only 200 quid less. Just make sure it has MOT and Tax to make it more attractive to the next buyer…

Thats just what i did 10 years ago

    The Plan was
A two week tour of Europe most of it spent in the Alps
Weekend and camping trips in the UK
UK Track Days to have even more fun
And then just drive it when the suns out and get soaked when its not
    Did all that

I just forgot to sell it,£250 a year to insure so it in the garage for when i feel the need

    Do it and Enjoy

My guess, going on the milage and service history, its been stored for most of its winter months too 😉

£1k, fsh, 48k on the clock, the hardtop roof alone is worth maybe £300-£500 if I decide to split it?

No sign of any rust in all the usual hot spots.

    Bit of a no brainer

You can get a TT roadster for £3k an early 00 plate with 100k on it..

So you do 5k miles in it, still sell it for what you bought it for..

Hard tops are great until the sun comes out (older cars without the posh folding roofs)
Keep the soft top fitted and you can have the roof on or off all day long

Its old, a 1998 reg, the none pop up headlight UK version, 1.8i.

A neighbour down the road has offered it to me, I cleared some trees from him and we got chatting about the car in his guarage, as you do 😉

Used to have Austin Sprites, MG Midgets in the past, hankering for something to tinker with over the winter to use next summer.
