i need a new tyre for the back of my Bigwig. Happy to go for same again, as I really liked the DHR2, but I also like the look of the above Spesh Grid tyres and wondered how the Grid casing stacked up against EXO. Has anyone used both?

Kinda using both at the same time at moment. I’ve a Slaughter Grid on the rear and a Shorty Exo 3c on the front.

To be honest, both have stood up well so far with no signs of wear or damage. I’m not a careful rider either!

I have used both – my experience of a purgatory grid lasted one downhill – sliced side wall – back on DHR2 now – no punctures for two years before or a year since… in the Lakes… may have been unlucky but those specialised are very light.

Specialized GRID are not any lighter than the Maxxis EXO.
gkeeffe, are you sure it was a GRID and not Control casing? I’ve not had any issues with Grid casings in 2 years

Specialized even the heavier ones I tried still seem to get sliced open on flints.Maxxis not.I ride Maxxis EXO.

Anyone tried the maxxis double down casing yet? I’m finding conti protection/apex to be a let down.

Purgatory Grid still has the old Grid casing (c.50g heavier than Control), whereas newer Butcher & Slaughter Grid use the new Grid 2BR casing which is about 180g heavier.

I’ve found the 2BR casing to be much tougher than Exo – more like a Supergravity.

If you go Specialized then the Purg makes a better rear tyre. Butcher is more suited to the front.

Hi Superfi it was definitely a grid on my bike – sidewalls seemed light compared to maxis terra 3c max.

I got money back – which was good on a 30 day try-buy thing with Specialised so I was no worse off. I know you can slice a tyre any day, but it happened riding across a field with a few rocky bits in, not on a total rock fest.

    Good feedback, thanks.

devash – I figured the Butcher might be closer to the DHR than the Purgatory although I don’t know how the 50a rolls compared to Maxxis 60a.

Tried both and prefer the DHR2.

Casings seem similar thickness, think I’ve put holes in both.
