Went to a gig about three weeks ago (Canninbal Corpse \m/) tried to pretend I was younger than I am (aided by alcohol) and went to the front…safe to say I emegerd victorious. Then, whilst STANDING STILL, some geezer came flying out of the ‘pit’ and slammed into the side of me. I was oblivious, watching the band and the next thing i know my knee has popped out and im on the floor like a fool. Ligament damage and Cartlidge damage all in one go. Nice.

Coming up to four weeks now since the incident and still having issues with it, still swelling up and movment is slightly limited. Gaggin to get back on the bike, but dont know how well it will handle me getting back on just now…doc said around 6 weeks till I am all good again, an Athroscopy is in the pipeline as well…what do you guys think? Gentle fireroads for a bit see how it goes? Or could this damage it more? Doctors and hospital have been next to useless at providing much info, any advice would be great!

Wife had a mess of a knee after dog ran into it flat out. Had a lateral release and some shaving of bone, was off bike for a good 6 months. Gradual return, first to gentle pootling and now after 3-4 months of build up able to ride a lap of the QECP trail. A dropper post has been a godsend along with lots of patience.

Mine is exactly the same as yours bud, wrecked it about 4 weeks ago playing squash and got the same diagnosis as yours too from the doc. Its a royal pain in the arse(this getting older lark!), even now when out walking a few miles with the kids on their bikes its still swelling a bit, but I’m fed up now, so I am going to have a gentle run on the bike this weekend with the kids and see how it is…

I ruptured my patellar tendon on Xmas eve. Lower leg as floppy as a floppy thing. According to my surgeon, one of the worst knee injuries in terms of recovery apparently.

I’m now nearly 4 months post op. it still hurts all the time. But, on a more positive note, I started bimbling around on family cycle trails 3 weeks ago (3 months post op). My advice is if it feels ok doing gentle excercises, then give a gentle bimble a try and see how it goes. And remember RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) afterwards.

    Good luck

tjr, so are you saying you dislocated your patella? did it pop back in or did you have to go to hospital to get it put back?
I’ve dislocated my right knee twice. Recovery took about a month.
I’ve not done it again since taken up cycling, but then again I don’t do any field sports now.

I’m recovering from a Medial collateral ligament tear. Bruised bones on both side of the knee but no cartilage damage thankfully. Had x rays and MRI scan about 3 weeks after injury but only saw the NHS knee specialist after about 6 weeks. Wore a don joy knee brace for 4 weeks. It’s been 11 weeks with no mtb’ing for me, it took over 6 weeks before I was able to bend my knee enough to turn the pedals. Hoping to get back on the bike for the first proper ride this week.

I’ve had physio following their exercises but the best thing I’ve found is just get out walking, cycling very short distances up to the point where the pain starts, then back off.
It’s the longest I’ve ever been off the bike- I’m very impatient so its been hard. But the bike is clean with some new bits (fork, shifters, handlebars, and brakes on the way). I found watching Chris akrigg’s recovery video quite good aswell.

Take it easy and good luck!

Well the thing I am most annoyed about is the fact I actually got turned away at A+E…after visiting the doc first of all, he said if its still as bad it is (it was swollen to buggery and I could barley move it at all and taking weight was an issue) to go to hospital. So since (working etc) I have just done the RICE thing and done some general gentle excerise. Its not so bad in that I can bend it ok now, but having been for some walks, it still swells slightly. I have had ongoing issues with cartlidge problems, but still no idea as to what damage was actually done, really annoying. Also my knee went back in on its own accord (after about half an hour of agonizing pain). NHS seem to drag their feet all the time…I actually went for an MRI to check the damage ahead of a proposed Athroscopy, that was two years ago, never heard a thing about the results even after chasing it up…nightmare.

I had an Arthroscopy and a lovely microfracture where they drilled the bone in 8 places to make it bleed and grow new cartilage in december. By the end of February I was back on a bike, the delay was due to the microfracture, it feels much better on the bike than it does walking. If it’s just an arthroscopy which I had 5 years back I was walking the same day and biking 4 weeks later!

NHS are a nightmare, I was fortunate enough to have Bupa through work, so much quicker.

Hope it feels better soon, certainly sucks not being able to bike!

Just found this wirh a search – any knee based progress gents?

I had first go on a static bike this week after over three months of inaction, I had a bit of a tumble on ice in Feb and snapped my patellar tendon. Pop. Ow. ****. The full job – mountain rescue and ambulance, gas and air, A&E.

Diagnosed straight away by x-ray (even I could see my patella shouldn’t be half way up my femur) and operated on the following morning. Reasonably well into rehab now but it’s been a slow process to get movement and strength back. Basically learning to move a leg and working up to learnkng to walk again. I have a new respect for toddlers.

Hoping to get some decent static bike stuff over the next fortnight and aiming to be on a real one by end of May.

How are the knee cripples doing? Five months in for me…

I think I wrote the above in mid-May but I’m still not on a real bike – big worry is getting off the bike/ putting a foot down, may be being overcautious but to be honest it’s not like we’ve had great weather anyway.

I can an hour plus on the turbo and been doing some fairly strenuous sessions over the past month or so so a lot of my strength is coming back, but I’d imagine a real bike will find me out quick enough!

I’m doing quite a bit down the gym too – cross trainer and weights – but still walking with a stick if going any distance.

Knees are ace when they work, but when they don’t it’s a major issue.
