Anyone here done it? I mean just got some old bikes, saw, welder and made something else?

    Am sharing this video because

    1. I’ve always wanted to design and build a bike

    and

    2. Found it enormously satisfying (and encouraging) watching the process and thought some of you would too. Tool-envy notwithstanding 🙂 He even makes the brake bosses and inserts from scratch. Must say I’ve never lusted after a rotating bike frame jig before now

Yep, i made a bakfiets style cargo bike earlier in the year. By far the most practical and satisfying thing ive built so far. Ive carried chest freezers, carpet, lengths of wood but the main goal is for my twins on cycle routes and tow path types.
I used an old 26 disc steel mtb frame and cut it off from top of the headtube and bb and made the front section. I used bmx forks and notched out the disc side for clearance and welded disc mounts on.
Tbf i used a milling machine as a tube notcher and a lathe for bearing cups and surfaces.

There is another guy on you tube who is making cargo bikes from old aluminium MTB frames.

Thanks, i used the larryvsharry bullit specs for dimensions and just used a larger frame size and slightly slacker head angle. I could quite easily have no car now which would be nice

Love the simplicity of the steering mechanism on the last one – shaped bar fitted to the fork leg at the front and to a custom stem faceplate at the back:
