  • Bruised sternum with 'mis-aligned collarbone'… out for how long?

    I had quite a catastrophic off at the weekend and ended up flying over the bars at a fair speed and landing hard on my right shoulder. It felt a bit bruised at the time, but it began to hurt a lot more later. I went to get it checked out at A&E and was told that my left collar bone might be broken and was probably also mis-aligned.

    I’ve got a CT scan next Tues to find out the prognosis, but am now starting to get a bit P’d off with the general aching, hobbling about and being unable to breathe deeply properly – the bruised sternum hurts!

    I broke my right collar bone a few years back and that was horrendous, so given how relatively ‘mild’ this one was I thought I’d only be out of action for a few days.. Beginning to wonder now.. 😕

    Any thoughts..? 🙂

    I hit a tree at BPW on 20th Sep, only properly back in action last week, and I got away lucky. Sh1t happens, you does the yumping and takes the knocks. Just dont bounce quite as quickly as I used to.

    6 week ago this Sunday 35 mph over the bars but double somersault and landed on back/r/shoulder, which resulted in broken right scapula/shoulder blade and 3 broken ribs (no’s 3,4,5) on r/hand side.
    Still really struggling with movement and sneezing/coughing takes pain to another level, my physio starts first week in December and I can’t drive until after Christmas, back on bike??? I’am hoping to get some miles in during Christmas but the way I feel more like end of jan so really really p*****d of at mo

    I did basically the same as JRM above on August 4th but managed 5 ribs. Its the Ribs that seem to hurt the most. The improvement is constant but gradual. After some initial problems with a misaligned collar bone I’m well on the mend now. Doing the Physio is hard but really worth it. I’m hoping to get back on the bike in about 2 weeks time.

    Smashed right collarbone and couple of ribs 1st May (right before Dyfi and our only beautiful summer in memory). But two weeks later got on the turbo then road after further two weeks. PITA at the time but I soon got through it. Only long term issue is confidence building off-road – only just regaining my trail skills.

    Yeeeech.. some nasty stories there. I have similar sneezing/coughing/getting up issues with one dodgy rib also that got done in the impact as well, so it’s all good fun!

    I’d never heard of a misaligned collarbone before, but I guess it’s good that I didn’t try to ‘power’ through things earlier in the week (when the painkillers were in full effect). I was tempted to get back in the pool on Tuesday, which probably wouldn’t have been a good idea. I guess I’ll be sensible and wait to find out the outcome of the CT scan next week… Had a look in the mirror this morning and the top of my left collar bone seems to be sticking up above the shoulder. 😯

    Still, I guess if you’re gonna get injured, now’s about the right time to do it. It was a nice summer/autumn of riding..! Hey-ho.. see what happens, eh.

    Did this skiing about 15 years ago from a hard, airborne straight to shoulder crash. Called a ‘Twigged Clavicle’, the rise in the outer end of the collar bone is caused by an over stretched ligament that passes down and back to your scapula. Cue a lot of painful exercises (that do work..) and slow re-hab. Road bike in a few weeks, depending on your pain thresshold, MTB later. Mine involved a cracked sternum, 5 ribs and the clavicle also displaced at the sternum end. All sounds dreadful but you will get through it. You may have to get used to the idea of spending several years when you have to do daily physio and twice weekly or more shoulder exercises in the gym to build up muscle padding to keep the shoulder stable. Mine is slightly unstable still, drifts up and down above the shoulder joint but rarely causes pain. Hope you’re managing to sleep ok. Did you make it to Dundee before breaking yourself?

    did my shoulder about 11 weeks ago,was gently riding after a few weeks,but has only just started to feel good enough to hit jumps etc,problem i had was pulling up and the bars or when braking hard.

    Was soft tissue damage and a dislocated shoulder at the time…it hurt a little

    ^ Yep.. that sounds very similar to me highlandman – but probably worse! I see an orthopedic specialist tomorrow, so should have a bit more info about what has gone pop. Sleeping is now sponsored by co-codamol! The crash happened locally – near Aberystwyth – I misjudged the depth of a fairly large muddy puddle that I thought I could easily manual across at speed. 😳

    Dundee was a pretty neat place – thanks! 😀 (didn’t get the job though)

    I separated my collarbone from the shoulder after an off at Bike Park UK last summer. Hurt like hell. Different story from all the doctors I saw….some saying it would need surgery….most just saying ‘give it 6 weeks and lets see how it goes’! took me about 3 months to get full movement and get back to biking and swim training….after a lot of rest and plenty of physio exercises (they do work). I am now left with a raised collar bone at the shoulder end….. but have good movement and getting more confidence back on the bike again finally!

    Dose up on the pain killers, do the exercise the physio gives you (religiously!) and be patient.
