Not sure if this should be in ‘bike’ or ‘chat’ but anyway I took a real blow to my knee almost a week ago (attempting to drop into a concrete skate bowl without either pads or skills 😳 hey, I made it . . . but certainly not rubber side down). I’ve ridden a little every day since just to keep things moving although I can barely bend it past 90 degrees, but my one knee is still twice the size of the other with a constant dull ache, completely numb to touch over the kneecap and now a lovely shade of blue/green.

Should I have rested it completely (please say no as it’s half-term and I really want to fit in a few longer rides before the week’s out)? It feels OK after biking (riding BMX brings tears to my eyes unless I stand up) and weight-bearing is fine, but a few longer walks with the dog this week have left it constantly aching afterwards.

I used to ride after things like this, and can now not ride a bike at all.

Rest up, take the Chopper out for a cruise at most….

Visit the quack and make sure you haven’t knackered it too much?

RICE – rest, ice, compression, elevation

Do gentle rides to keep it moving and if you ride with the saddle down put it up to allow full leg extension.

Cheers all – may make an appt to get it checked at the docs just for reassurance if it’s no better at the weekend.

Haven’t got the Chopper anymore Tinsy – sold it at a massive loss on ebay and received burger all feedback 🙄

    LOL!

You’re a complete nutter! What is it, your neighbour’s kids call you??

I can come down and look after your knee, if you like? I’m good with knees.

When I did similar, doctor told me that if I could walk on it, I should walk on it, and that for the type of injury I had, resting and stuff would just make me stiffen up and make things worse.

But he did wiggle my knee around and stuff to check that I hadn’t done any serious damage to some thing or other before telling me that.

Good excuse to hang onto my Chopper then, Tinsetta seems to have claimed it has hers anyhow… I get the basket on the family trips..

Well I can wiggle the knee cap back and forth without any pain so I guess there can’t be any serious damage – I’m off for a quick spin.

What is it, your neighbour’s kids call you??

Tinsy, that’s a Mk I isn’t it? Definitely one to hang on to.

If it’s not too painful to touch, try massaging it gently with something like Arnica cream. Not sure if the cream has a geniune active ingredient, or simply stops a skin burn, but having constantly tweaked my knees doing other things most of my life, can vouch for it working.
Best done leaning against a sofa with a cushion under your thigh – making sure you are relaxed in front of the woodburner in my case! – whilst watching your fav. tv.

If ‘not right’ before too long, try a local osteopath. I resisted for years til a mate made me go. I hobbled in and skipped out! I was also relieved to know * exactly* the specific damage I’d done, how to sort it out now and possible preventative ideas for the future.
Yes you have to pay, ( mine £18/trip, others locally ~ £30 ) but money well spent to get specialist opinion, not just a vague idea for a gp who is a ‘general practitioner’ not a skeletal specialist.
    my tuppence!
( but DO take it easy, knees are sods to sort out when you’ve done ’em proper!)
    cheers
