So some brands have gone downhill in recent years. What about brands that are now warranting a second look?

I suggest Saracen for a start.

    Rockshox.

Who would have seriously considered a set of Dukes over a set of MX Pros 10 years ago?

Now Rockshox are pretty much the defacto standard for sensible money forks.

Shimano (brakes) they were never poor, per say, just a bit average but now they are all pretty brilliant

i think so. 10 yrs ago you woundn’t see many around and their reputation wasnt much to shout about. they are very popular now for making quality products at good prices.

well, you actually raise a good point, I was a very worried graphic designer in the 90s, the fear that Apple would go under was very real.

Bang on. As a graphic designer in the 90’s, you looked at the substandard crap they were churning out, and thought ‘at least give us a fighting chance of the bean-counters not transferring everyone over to PC’s!!!’

…or they would be, if my MX Pros weren’t still going strong 🙂

Another shout for Skoda, Audi also the original A4 was not as good as the 3 Series and the early RS cars were never as great as the M cars until recently.

Rock Shox have come along way since the dark days of the Psylo!

Formula brakes have got better too.

Second vote for Formula brakes. I first fitted a pair in about 1998, their castings and fastening were made of cheese ~ everything crumbled like Caerphilly. Now they’re great, up there with the best.

Giant bikes……..used to be what bike shops stocked if the couldn’t get a “decent brand”….. look at ’em now!

The trick the supermarkets have managed to pull off is with their own brand goods. They used to offer a cheaper look-a-likey alternative to the branded goods they stocked. Now they can offer their own brand goods as the premium, higher priced alternative to the household names and tesco in particular has started to used invented brand names for their value lines to distance their name from the cheap stuff.
