whats a average price to get them done at the old LBS?

is it worth it on a set of LX?

Very little actual improvement to function for your money. a slightly harder lever feel perhaps

Braided hose also wears away the paintwork double quick.

Depends really. Shagged out old baggy hoses replaced with Goodridge hoses can make a huge difference, especially to Shimano which seem to have a soft lever (if that’s a issue for you). Wouldn’t take it to the LBS necessarily though, it’s a 5 minute job. (honestly, if I can do it, anyone can).

They’re covered in plastic, no different to any other plastic hose rubbing against your frame

I’ve found the opposite. E.g. your Goodridge is a lot more flexible than your Shimano, so it actually rubs less.

Can’t comment on cost as I can’t remember how much it was, but I have XT hydraulics on 2 bikes. One with plastic, one with Goodridge. The Goodridge brakes feel much better. Definitely a firmer lever feel and I find them easier to control when you’re on the limit of grip.
