   Had tro go to B&Q today to buy some paint.

   Whilst there I also looked for a cross dowel nut, to replace the one that my son has lost that used to be an integral part of his bed.

   

   B&Q sell them in packs of 5 for £7.28

   I was disinclined to buy them.

   When I got home to my small town I went to the local hardware shop and bought one for 15p.

   It does cause one to question whether these big out of town retail places really do have the best interests of their customers to heart.

   So support your local hardware shop (or LBS etc.)

   There's usually a tester pack of stuff like that in my B&Q. They kindly open a pack and let you take one.

   That's how they get you! When you need that little thingy urgently on a Sunday diy session, that job that must get finished before beer o'clock, or the wife and even the dog will spend the rest of the evening chuntering at you for not completing said diy task! Local hardware shop shuts at dinner on a Saturday, and so it's a trip with the masses to the money pit that is b and q!

   some of their tools are pretty cheap, and if you hang on for them some of the sales are good too.

   But yeah, that's a rip off, screwfix will be the same price, but you'll get 1000 of them

   B&Q aren't that great on value but they're a good one stop shop. Most specialist merchants match or better B&Q for price.

    I'm more concerned for your local shop. 15p. If it took 2-3 mins to find the thing and serve you, the actual takings might be less than minimum wage, let alone profit!

    Because that's what they say. You know, all of these retailers say the same thing...

    ... about putting the customer first, building relationships etc.

    Obviously they aren't doing that really, except insofar as it will maximise their profits over whatever term the CEO is interested in.

    However, one would have thought that there comes a point at which it is so obvious that they are ripping the customers off that they may risk putting the customer off for good, and that's not good business.

    I would suggest that the pricing of this item crosses that line.

    Floor brads:
    B&Q - £5 for 125g
    Jewson - £11.00ish per kilo
    Builders merchants on the corner - £4.68 per kilo.

    B&Q is nearly 8 times the local guy's price.
