The other book thread reminded me that I need a new book.
I’ve just read ‘A Painted House’ by John Grisham & loved it. I need something with no plot, few characters & no wondering who’s who, just a good story.
My dippy brain can’t take in intertwined info. 😥

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Heart of Darkness, Conrad.

    Storytelling perfection.

    The Flashman Papers, McDonald Fraser.

Informative, fascinating, fun. Oh, and boobs.

If you want something where you can feel the grimness oozing off the page – the Red Riding quartet of books by David Peace.

You might have seen the TV adaptation as a trilogy about 8 years ago.

As an added bonus for you Essel, it’s set in Yorkshire.

    What sort of genre?

For the second time today I find myself recommending Chris Brookmyre. Compelling yarns but not stupidly convoluted.

The old man and the sea, by big Ernesto.

Great simplistic book, but satisfies on so many levels.

And it’s about fishing, so you’ll bloody love it!.

    Kind of like Conan the…
But a damn good romp, nevertheless.

Part of a series, so might work out cheaper if you can find them as a job-lot.

Worth checking out Lin Carters other work.

Can you recommend a film that was as good as the book? I can’t think of any!

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I got Heart of Darkness for free on Kindle, cheers Flashy!

    Some contenders:

Heart of Darkness – Apocalypse Now
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Blade Runner

If you appreciate Heart of Darkness then Conrad’s other books are worth reading, especially the nautical ones (Conrad became a captain in the merchant navy), though Nostromo is quite hard going if you don’t want multiple sub-plots and lots of characters.

Plenty, they are just not the book 😉 So long as you don’t expect a word for word translation to the screen it’s fine

    Fluke by James Herbert.

I liked it and I’m not into big, heavy reads.

Just rattled through Johnny Marrs autobiography.

Very enjoyable read, bonus points for being well-written and not delving too deeply into the boring record-industry stuff (unlike one of the black sabbath books I’ve read)

Marr should write another book just focusing on the equipment, just for all the gear-heads.

The Ascent of Rum Doodle (A book which I will recommend regardless of any posters requirements). And for more feel good comedy bunglings pretty much anything by P G Woodhouse.

The Fleming James Bond books are an easy read (not read any of the other authors efforts).

    fear and loathing

    Not sure if serious

A girl at my 6th form was in Razzle. Caused a bit of a stir. Odd thing was, she came across very conservative and dull.

This is true. I can’t compute multiples of people & various plots. No Idea why. 😕
