Crank length!
Currently running 175mm Race Face cranks on my On One inbred the question is am I being silly and no one runs 175mm on singlespeeds, or does anyone think 165mm is a good idea?

I've always had 175mm cranks on my singlespeeds. 165? Silly but why not? More effort uphill, better down, your legs/lungs. Enjoy!

I run 175mm on my SS, and 170mm on geared rides. Im not sure if its psychological but I find them easier to crank up the climbs than shorter ones. I have a 30" inside leg.

A lot of people run longer cranks on a singlespeed as they give you more torque to turn the gear over. I ride 180s mostly.

I went from 170s (cheap 10 years ago) to 175s and there does seem to be a very slight discernable difference...
I certainly wouldn't want to go shorter again

If your style is fast spinning and the trails you ride aren't too savage then shorter cranks would be a good idea. However as someone already pointed out the theory is that longer cranks give you more leverage when the trail goes up. I personally run 180 on my SS and 175 on both my road and MTB because I had read about 'muscle memory' which means that your legs get used to spinning in a certain way.

My SS runs a set of 180mm cranks and my geared bike is 175mm. However, years ago when I rode fixed I used 165mm. The main reason being so I could go through corners without clipping a pedal.

You found 10mm makes a big difference to how often you clip your pedals on the floor?

180mm for ss offroad = good leverage for grinding
175mm for road and MTB = standard stuff really
170mm fixed road = easier to spin (quite important, especially downhill)
165mm track = you dont want pedal strike at 30mph with 20 riders on your wheel!
